SPHINCS+ sigs run tens of KB vs Ed25519's 64 bytes, so "minimal changes to consensus logic" doesn't mean minimal bandwidth once you actually swap the primitive in. Sonic explicitly pegs their path to the Ethereum Foundation's PQ research, which is the correct play — Solana's April push already showed what throughput looks like when a chain tries to solo this.
